Bonus 29: Scary, Scary Monster

Scary, Scary Monster
by
Matt Zurbo

One day Luna built a monster
just to scare herself,
made from bits and pieces
found on her garage shelf.

It stirred, it shifted, it rumbled,
“Eek! What horrible delight!”
But then sat down for a chat,
speaking strangely nice.

“The planet isn’t well,” it sighed.
“What are you doing to help?”
“If we don’t plant some trees,
it will sink without a yelp!”

“Oh,” thought Luna, puzzled.
“That’s not the type of fright I’m after.”
But the monster then continued
with its predictions of disaster.

“You’ll get pimples as you grow,
pimples everywhere!
And like at least one boy,
more than you can bare!”

“Playing in rain,” it said,
“Will give you a nasty cough.
And one day you’ll get old,
just like Mrs Gough.”

“Enough!” Luna cried,
frightened to her core.
“All I wanted was a BOO!
Maybe a little gore.”

“Please!!” she pleaded, “Chase me,
drooling drool, snapping teeth!”
“Ew,” her monster squirmed,
in a voice quite petite.

Then, it quietly whispered;
“Watching TV rots your brain!”
And how “a dentist’s chair
will bring your teeth great pain!”

Now too worried about the world,
too scared to eat or age,
all that fretting filled the child
with a mighty rage!

“I WANT A GRUESOME MONSTER!!”
Luna threw a fit.
“WITH SUCH CRAZY EYES AND FURY
A KID WILL RUN FROM IT!

To which Luna’s beast,
terrified, in retreat,
placed a full-length mirror,
at the small girl’s feet.

WAAAAH!

“Save me!” Luna bolted,
shaking head-to-toe,
asking for protection
from her greatest foe.

“Oh…”

Luna felt quite silly, as
the monster gave a hug.
Meek, unique, they went to play,
and marvel at some bugs.
