Silly Stuff
by
Matt Zurbo
If I could, I’d draw you and I
having fun, in the sky.
Then I’d draw a hairy monster,
tough,
and mean,
and full of bother.
Even worse –
or better –
my monster might be,
what others see,
when I’m angry.
If I could, I’d draw a tree,
and all the fun things
a tree can be;
A castle, a ship,
place to be free.
If I had no coin,
I’d draw with chalk,
on a footpath,
where people walk.
Let them see
beneath their feet,
mermaids swimming,
what a treat!
If I could,
I’d draw on a wall,
make passers-by feel
very small!
Or, who knows,
very tall.
I’d draw Vikings,
lost,
in fields of flowers,
schoolyard kids
with superpowers.
I’d draw friends for those
who feel alone.
Let them share
a royal throne.
I’d draw with ink,
I’d draw with led,
I’d paint some vines
upon my bed.
I’d draw with a stick
in the sand,
an alien in
an alien band.
If I could,
make us all feel grand.
I’d draw a comic,
a poster,
a watercolour story,
just draw and draw,
for fun and glory.
Make people laugh,
make them sigh,
try and put
a tear in their eye.
Give them presents
that I’d made,
memories that
forever stayed.
But the thing I’d want,
most of all,
is to draw with you,
things big and small.
To share this
great liberation,
birthed from a combined
imagination!
If anyone said;
“Your work is rough!”
We’d just laugh
at such silly stuff.
“Any drawing‘s good,”
you’d insist.
”I do concur!” I’d add,
in bliss.
And who knows,
if we drew enough,
the things we drew,
might,
in turn,
draw other stuff!
The End

What a beautiful picture this poem paints, Matt! I can feel the love you have for your daughter. In addition, the last line sparks the readers imagination to take off and fly 🙂
